Playoff Update: Gamblers win group B finals. Blue Steel take game 1.

Group B Finals – Gamblers Take It!

The Dodgers and Gamblers faced off for game 2 of the Group B finals on Sunday to yet again another nail-biter.

The Dodgers controlled the first 3 innings as they ran up a 5-1 lead featuring a solo shot by Sean Routbard and hits from the top half of their lineup. Nathan Jack continued his stellar pitching from Game 1 until the Gambler bats erupted in the 4th inning, featuring a 3 run shot by David Benoliel to narrow the Dodgers lead to 5-4. Behind the solid pitching duo of Gary Tennenbaum and Mark Lee, the Gamblers didn’t look back and added another 5 in the 5th featuring a 2 run homer by Jack Benzacar, and then one more in 6th. With the score at 10-5 going into the the 7th, the Dodgers came charging back with 3 quick runs. With two outs, runners on 2nd and 3rd, and the go-ahead run at the plate, the Gamblers looked to be on their heels when Gary Tennenbaum drew a routine fly to center to end the game 10-8.

Kudos to the Dodgers for a solid roster-wide performance, and for pushing forward without their all-star pitching duo.

Group A Final – Game 1

The first game of the “A” final between two power house teams lived up to pre-game expectations. It was a back forth tilt, that saw the Rays get off to a quick start in in the top of first. Back to back home-runs by Robbie Cooper (a three run shot) and Steve Yermus (a solo shot) saw the rays take a 4-0 lead before anybody was out. Blue Steel stormed back with three runs of their own. John Marshall had the big blow with a monstrous shot to centre field. The Rays took a 6-5 lead into the fifth inning before Larry Herscovitch slammed a two run homer that just cleared the fences to give Blue Steel and 7–6 lead that they never relinquished. “Goggles” was so elated with the home run that he was reported to be seen bar hopping late into the wee hours of the morning last night in the Cabbage town area of Toronto. Blue Steel added two more runs that inning to go up 9-6.The Rays clawed back to with-in one with a two spot in the 6th. An insurance run in the bottom of the inning gave Blue Steel the eventual 10-8 win.

Lorne Bloomberg who always catches a superb game behind the plate, led off the seventh with a single up the middle. However, Howard Shilling was able to get the next three outs to salvage the win for Blue Steel. All in all it was a great game, with lots of good players who have lots of respect for each other and the game.

Game two is slated for Thursday night, September 29th, at 8:30 pm, with game three if necessary, Sunday, October 2nd at 10 am.

A big congratulations to the Gamblers who defeated the Dodgers, coincidentally by the same score 10-8 to take the “B” Championship.
