On Wednesday, Royal Blue ended their longest drought in history (10 losses in a row dating back to and moved into the win column with a 6-5 victory over Navy, in a well-played game. Michael Gerlock went the distance for us to earn the win. Andy Mayer and Jason Greenwald each drilled two rbi doubles to key the victory.
The late game featured a rematch from the 2014 finals pitting the Gimmel Rays vs. the Orange Crush. The Rays continued their solid playoff run with a 15-8 win, highlighted by effective pitching from the trio of Adam Hennick, Larry Krupski and Jeff Krupski. Adam pitched a solid 4 innings, departing with a 1 run lead, followed by Larry who pitched 2 key innings shutting down the meat of the Orange order and Jeff finishing the job with the final 7th inning to wrap up the victory. The Rays scored first with a quick run in the 1st, highlighted with a single by Mike Krestell who then stole 2nd and 3rd and later scored on a Rick Meslin double. The Crush came back with a 2 run hr from Ilan Medad to take the lead, but the Rays stormed back with a 2 run home run from hot hitter Geoff Rotstein. The Rays poured on runs with doubles and triples from Rick, Steve Yermus, Jeff Marcus, Jeff K, Mike, Lorne Bloomberg and Robbie Cooper.
On Thursday, Green and Silver squared off to close out their round robin series. Green got off to a fast 10-3 lead by the end of the 3rd with solid all-around hitting, and capped off with a 5 run 3rd. Big bats were delivered by Richard Smith’s three run home run and Rob Godfrey’s 2-run double with the bases loaded. Silver’s pitching steadied out and clawed back to a 13-11 deficit by end of the 6th featuring a towering 2 run smash by Ron Herzceg. Silver made it close in the 7th with a 2 out single by Jack Benzacar, but Sean Zolberg pitched through the final fly ball out to end the game, finishing off a solid complete game performance.
Blue Steel, behind the stellar complete game performance of Michael Wolfman, defeated the Giants 11-3 to complete the round robin portion of the playoffs. Patience at the plate, good defense and smart base running by Blue Steele kept the Giants off balance all night. Blue Steel was led by Dan Berlin who contributed offensively, with a home run and an extra base hit as well as playing flawless defense at shortstop. Colin Halpern called a great game behind the plate and also contributed significantly with key hits.
The Giants were led by Bobby Green who was responsible for all the Giant’s runs with a home run hat trick (three solo home runs).
Semi-finals start Sunday. Group A had Game 1 of Red-Powder followed by Orange-Gimmel. On Monday, the B pool has their sudden death semi-final with Silver taking on Green followed by Navy vs Royal. Updated schedule here 2016-playoff-sked3
