May 8th week recap – THE SEASON BEGINS…
Double Blue vs Powder 5/11
In game 1 action, Double Blue beat Powder 2 by a score of 9-6. Obvious that lots of new guys were just getting to know each other and get a feel for their new teams and the game of baseball again. Game was very close throughout with Double Blue clinging to a one-run lead into the final inning. Some timely hitting and base stealing by Tracy provided the added margin for victory. Other highlights include Sean Routbard in mid-season form at the plate, while also providing the necessary defensive backup behind the plate. Newcomer Henry Morton made a fine play at 2nd base to save at least two runs, and Warren Morris was his ever-steady self at the hot corner. Thanks to Shawn for lending his pitching arm for a few key innings before passing the reigns to our new starter Nate, who was obviously working out the kinks after a long offseason.
Orange vs. Red
National League – May 11, 2017
Orange 7 Red 4
Solid pitching from the three Orange pitchers on a cool night combined with a few timely hits were the backbone of a opening game of the season victory. Great job behind the dish from catcher Randy Molson handling all three throwers with veteran ease and super diving catch from centre fielder Barry Samuel were the defensive standouts of the night. A special welcome to the newest members of The Crush, rookie Josh
Tie – Game 1 between Powder Blue and Rays
Final score 9-9.
Adam Hennick and Larry Krupski combine to hold Powder to scoring in only 2 of 6 innings and shutting down Powder in final 2 innings as Rays mount comeback to tie game.
John Marshall started the game and pitched shut down ball limiting scoring to 3 runs (I think). Frank Marshall pitched the 5th and saw the Rays chip away with 4 runs and then Mike Wolfman pitched the final inning.
Solid work in the outfield with Jeff Marcus debuting in right field and nailing a runner at home plate to end the 1st inning and 4 innings later Leslie Bernstein uncorks a beauty throw from left field to nail Danny Berlin at home plate.
Great catch in left field by Larry Herscovitch to limit scoring and solid work at shortstop all night by Steve Goldsmith.
Powder Blue scored 3 in the 1st and 5 in the 3rd and one more in the 5th. Big hits included rbi single from Colin Halpern, home runs from Steve Goldsmith, Colin Halpern and David Goldstein to stake the Powder Blue team to an 8-1 lead.
Rays chipped away with one run in the 1st and 2 more in the 4th with rbis from Jeff Marcus and Lorne Bloomberg. A big 5th inning scored another 4, with Larry Krupski , Rick Meslin and Jeff Marcus driving in runs. Rays capped the comeback in the 6th to score 2 more to tie it with Adam Bernstein singling, and with 2 outs Mike Krestell singles and Rob Cooper singles to score 2 and tie it up.
Black v. Purple May 10, 2017
Black won 6-3, player of the game was Ashley Gordon who went 4 for 5 all extra base hits and made a gross number of stellar plays at shortstop including a diving grab off a deflection with a rocket throw from his knees… too bad first base couldn’t catch it.
