The Executive League ‘winner take all’ game took place today on a beautiful ‘EREV’ New Year Sunday morning. The weather Gods smiled on the Executive League for the second straight game as the rainy weather subsided, the sun came out, and it was GAME ON.
Blue Steele got off to another quick start, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning on the strength of 2-run homer from John Marshall. Colin Halpern went back to back with a monster shot of his own to deep centre field. Blue Steele went ahead 4-0 when they scratched out a run in the second inning after a lead-off hit by Dana Karkheck. The G Rays trimmed the lead in the fourth inning to 4-2 after some uncharacteristic sloppy play by the Blue Steele infield. Michael Wolfman pitched three stellar innings to keep the G Rays off-balance most of the morning. Blue Steele kept the ‘pedal to the metal’ coming right back with a three spot of their own in the bottom of the fourth. Halpern again came up big, leading the charge with a 2-run homer. The relentless Rays fought back but the turning point may have come in the bottom of the sixth when Robbie Cooper smashed a comebacker up the middle that Howard Shilling stabbed to prevent a hit and save his manhood. The Rays did score a run in the top of the seventh to close the gap, but finally succumbed 7-3 to the 2016 Executive League Champions: Blue Steele.
A great end to a wonderful 2016 Executive League campaign by two teams that fought fair and hard all year long.
Happy New Year!
