Game 2 of the Finals featured the Gimmel Rays facing off against the Blue Steel in an elimination game on Wednesday night.
The Blue Steel came out with a quick run in the 1st inning with Steve Bleiwas hammering a solo HR to left center and then added 2 more runs off a Colin Halpern 2 run single, pushing them to a 3-0 lead. Howard Shilling was on his game early and late, and Mike Wolfman pitched well to keep the game in check for the first 3 innings.
With the game sliding along, the Rays stepped up in the 4th inning to take a 5-3 lead, with a long hit filled inning featuring a Jeff Krupski bloop single, followed by a Robbie Cooper single and big 3 run HR off the bat of clean up hitter Steve Yermus. Mike Krestell and Jeff Marcus followed with doubles to push the lead and added a hit from Lorne Bloomberg to cap the inning off. The 5-3 lead was pushed to 7-3 thanks to an infield hit from Adam Hennick and some ballsy baserunning by Larry Teitel to take 2 bases and ultimately score on a big line drive from Rick Meslin, hitting after an intentional walk to Jeff Krupski.
The Rays nursed their 7-3 lead through 6 strong innings by Adam Hennick who was hitting his spots all night. The 7th inning started with a Les Bernstein single and after a deep pop out the Blue Steel followed with 2 walks to load the bases, only to have Larry Krupski close the game out by inducing a game ending double play from Steve Yermus to Rick Meslin.
Defensive highlights included a beauty play by Geoff Rotstein to knock down an infield laser and throw out the runner from his knees, as well as great work all night by Steve Yermus, and the outfield play on both teams. Shout outs to John Marshall for great play around the bag and Randy Weinstein and Jeff Rodin for some big line drive hits.
The final game of the 3 game series goes on Sunday at 10am and should be a great finish.
