On Monday, Red beat Silver 6-2. In what was a very good pitching duel between the Marks, Goody pitched a complete game with only 1 earned run, while Lee kept Silver in the game all the way until the 6th inning when Red broke open a tight game with 3 runs. Silver came back at the top of the 7th to stack the bases but couldn’t convert on the opportunity in the end.
Game 2 featured a marquee match-up of Royal Blue vs. the Gimmel Rays. Facing off against former teammate Dave Katz (aka Katman) the Gimmel Rays came back from a quick 2-0 deficit to score 8 runs to win the game 8-2.
The game was a close battle through to the 5th. Jon Purther went 3 for 3, Saul snagged a sizzling line drive at first, Bob Tesis hit a beautiful slicing single to right off Larry K, and Katman pitched a complete game, holding the Rays off balance for much of the game.
Adam Hennick continued his playoff form by spinning 6 great innings with Larry Krupski finishing the game out in the 7th . Hennick spotted the ball all night and delivered key strike outs and pop ups to shut the Royal Blue bats down in key moments. The Rays defense was spectacular with double plays up the middle, featuring a Mike Krestell DP at 2b and a great turn and pivot by Jeff Krupski , dug out nicely by Rick Meslin and 1b. Steve Yermus played outstanding 3b to finish a few great plays down the line.
The hitting was solid with the middle of the order delivering key hits including back to back triples by Rick Meslin (one of his 2 triples on the night) and Jeff Marcus to break the game open, and solid hits from Hennick, Lorne Bloomberg, Steve Yermus and Geoff Rotstein to push the game out of reach in the later innings.
